california (eventually)!

The week after Thanksgiving included submitting our group research proposal, taking orals for research, and taking a yoga final.  Friday evening was the last First Friday Dinner of the year for Graduate Christian Fellowship with an Advent theme and a white elephant gift exchange.

Monday morning was the final for Advanced Medical Screening.  I had the afternoon to study for my Spanish final before meeting three friends at Passion City Church for the Grove, the women's ministry.

Tuesday morning I had one last research meeting for the year followed by a meeting for one of my electives for next semester - a preceptorship for the first year's General Medical Conditions class.  There will be five preceptors assisting the faculty with labs.  I left the meeting early to rush over and take my Spanish final.  I did my last email answering for the year, climbed at the Emory wall for the last time in 2013, and headed out to Passion City Church again for community group.  We spent some of our time gift-wrapping childrens' books - the congregation of Passion City Church gave a book to each child in grades K-5 in the Atlanta Public School District, delivered in the week before Christmas break.

Wednesday morning I got up dark and early to catch a ride to the airport with one of my classmates.  Hope's roommate gave her a ride so she could head off to Sydney, Australia for a month!  Since her flight was a couple hours earlier than mine, I hung out with her until her flight boarded before heading to my own gate.  I got on my own flight later and was happy to get back to the BEST COAST.
hope's pretty excited about going to australia!
My mom went off to her taiko drumming session shortly after I arrived so my father and I walked across the street for dinner at Mango Garden.  The next afternoon I headed up to Tahoe, arriving just in time to surprise most of the worship team with whom I used to sing at their practice.  Friday I went to Sierra and was able to ride for a bit and even ran into a couple of the Brackett kids.  That evening I went to Sierra Community Church's Christmas dinner.

Saturday I caught up with the Sierra team and was able to ride with them for a few runs before catching a last end-of-the-day run with my good friend Jim.  Jim and I started teaching snowboarding at Sierra the same season, 1998-99.
got to ride with the sierra team, lauren and megan
Sunday morning I was able to join my former worship team leading for both the morning services at Sierra Community Church.  It was also a good chance to catch up with a bunch of people I hadn't seen in a while.  I joined my friend Nicole that afternoon at Sierra for her first time back snowboarding after a four year hiatus due to finances and injuries.

Monday I had planned to snowboard in the morning before joining a couple friends for horseback riding in Minden in the afternoon, but I noticed a deep ding in the base of my board and took it in for repair instead.  I still got my ride in, though!  Monday evening I had dinner with my friend Jim, his wife Erin, and their two small children.

Tuesday morning I went to Minden again, this time for an interview at a private PT clinic.  It went well and looks like a promising option for after graduation.  Wednesday I observed in the Carson City office for that clinic followed by a couple of hours at the Minden location before taking care of a dentist appointment (my dentist happens to be just around the corner from the Minden office).

My last day in Tahoe I got a couple of runs in at Sierra before meeting Pearl in Folsom for lunch.  I enjoyed dinner with Libby and family in Walnut Creek and ended up back in Cupertino that night.

thankful

A review of the past couple of weeks showcases some of the things for which I am thankful, including friends, climbing, the weather, hiking, Graduate Christian Fellowship, Passion City Church, Stride Ahead therapeutic riding, horses, work, school, movies, and more.

November 16 I got to go climb outdoors again, this time in Sand Rock, Alabama, at Cherokee Rock Village.  David and Lisa went again as well as Craig, a philosophy PhD student I hadn't seen since the first week Emory's wall was open this semester.  It was chilly and foggy when we got there.  The fog cleared and it warmed up a little bit but stayed overcast the whole day.  I was able to climb routes that felt harder than the last place I had climbed with David and Lisa.

Wednesday morning was a LONG four hours as all 14 research groups gave status presentations for their projects, with the entire class of 65 required to be present for the whole time.  Our group did well despite having our entire presentation reworked 22 hours earlier by our main adviser.  15 of us then went straight to yoga for another three and a half hours, and a couple of those students also had another three hour class after.  That had to be an incredibly long day - 8 am to 7:15 PM with less than one hour of breaks between class times.  I had wanted that other class as my third elective, this was one day where I was glad I hadn't gotten it!

Thursday we had a fundraiser to raise money to buy supplies for the PT service trip to the Dominican Republic next spring.  I am one of the eight students who have been chosen to go on this trip - I'm really looking forward to providing PT services and training, all in Spanish!  I helped out with the fundraiser after working for PT admissions for an hour (I'm now only answering emails, trying to help Annie, my fellow Graduate Assistant, catch up on hours by letting her do all the other tasks), and then went directly to Spanish class where I had to do a presentation on Costa Rica.  I already thought it would be a cool place to visit, researching it only made it more appealing.  Per my usual busy Thursday, about an hour after Spanish class I worked my shift at the climbing wall and then ran directly over to Graduate Christian Fellowship's Thursday Night Community Group.

Friday night, I joined friends from Graduate Christian Fellowship to climb at Wall Crawlers in Decatur.  It's a great deal - students climb for $6 on Fridays.  Their routes are pretty challenging - harder than similarly rated routes at Emory.  Sunday morning I joined a bunch of other PT students from all three classes to re-certify for CPR.  Monday after class Jodi and I went to Stride Ahead and volunteered with the therapeutic riding lessons - Friday's lessons had been rescheduled to Monday because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Monday's weather was quite chilly, and Tuesday it rained cats and dogs!  I believe we got over 2 inches of rain in a 26 or 28 hour period.  Wednesday morning when I went out, there was a bit of slush on my windshield and on my landlord's umbrella which had blown from their porch into the side of my car.  I have been loving the cool weather and don't mind the rain even though I can get pretty wet walking to school.

Thanksgiving day I drove up to Canton in the morning to meet my friend Aubrey from Passion City Church.  I joined Aubrey and her mother Sherry to go to Aubrey's sister Kelly's house outside of Chattanooga, TN.  Kelly's husband Brad smoked a turkey on their grill, and we enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving lunch followed by a short walk in the neighborhood to work up an appetite for a plethora of desserts.  We headed back to Georgia in the late afternoon since Sherry had to work early the next morning.

Since it was relatively early, I ended up heading over to Katherine's apartment where she had hosted a potluck dinner for Graduate Christian Fellowship students and alumni who were in town for Thanksgiving.

Friday afternoon, Aubrey joined me for a hike at Sweetwater Creek State Park.  The weather was beautiful - sunny, crisp, and clear.  It was crowded for the first half mile or so and thinned out till we were by ourselves at the far end of the loop we took.

Saturday was mainly a lazy day, with some schoolwork accomplished before I took a stroll around the block.  In the evening, Marissa, Katherine, and I went out and saw "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" at Movie Tavern, where movies are only $5 with student ID!

out and about

I asked my parents if they would get me some allergy meds because I ran out and they can get them for a really good deal.  I got an awesome package from them that not only contained the allergy pills, but eight large, carefully packed, home-grown Fuyu persimmons and a couple jars of snacks!  THANK YOU!!
VERY welcome care package!
The second Saturday in October I got a chance to go climb outdoors.  I joined David and Lisa (first and second year medical students I met at the climbing wall) to head up to Foster Falls northwest of Chattanooga in southern Tennessee.  We spent all day climbing, I got to do my first lead routes since my one and only in 2005, and we ended the day with a delicious dinner at Cheeburger Cheeburger in Chattanooga.

The following Monday morning, the five of us in the qualitative research group sat on a panel to share some of our clinical experiences with the first year DPT class as well as field questions they had.  The following Saturday was Hispanic Health Fair 2013, an annual event sponsored by the Hispanic Health Coalition of Georgia.  Emory staffed a PT tent with one faculty member and two shifts of 6-8 students working in pairs and threes.  Despite on and off rain, we were able to treat at least 20 patients with varying diagnoses including low back, neck, wrist, shoulder, and knee pain.  I had an amusing experience when I was called over to help a first and second year pair - I spoke my limited Spanish with the patient and got on well as I assessed and treated her neck pain.  We moved from her lying face-down on a treatment table to having her sit in a chair to teach her a couple of exercises.  At that point, she began to describe wrist pain that she was also suffering.  I asked her to please repeat what she had said more slowly because my Spanish really wasn't very good.  Surprised, she replied, "Oh, I can speak English!" and proceeded to speak only English the rest of her treatment time!

Friday I went as usual to volunteer with Stride Ahead.  This time, I volunteered for three hours instead of two because Jodi couldn't make it and our usual time slot was full.  I met a little girl who only needed a leader for her horse, she could keep her balance on her own.  She was very cute and extremely entertaining - the entire session was full of questions like, "So Nancy, what is your favorite kind of dog?" or "So Nancy, where is your favorite Toys R Us?"  When I went back to my car to go home, I saw that I had missed a call from my classmate Rob.  I called him back and he suggested taking advantage of the wonderful weather (Rob is one of the few Georgia locals who agrees with me that cool weather is wonderful) to walk up Stone Mountain.  I went and met him at his place and as we headed out to Stone Mountain, I saw on my Instagram feed that a couple of our other classmates had gone to Stone Mountain earlier that day and had taken a photo at the top where they were both jumping.  Rob (who happens to be 6'-5" and solid muscle - a power lifter) and I agreed that we had to take a similar picture.  It took about 8 tries - our first photographer recruit had problems with my phone not cooperating, and then didn't end up having very good timing in the photo he took with Rob's.  I restarted my phone and we tried one more time with another volunteer photographer, and this guy had perfect timing and framing:

That weekend was Fall Break for the first and second year classes - we third years didn't get Fall Break this year.  To celebrate, my friend Bruce (formerly of my class, now in the first year class) threw a "Fall Break Shindig" at his house.  His wife Mary cooked up an amazing Filipino feast, a couple of my classmates and several of Bruce's came to hang out, and we relaxed in the back yard around a fire pit after stuffing ourselves.  That was Saturday - Sunday evening I went over to my friend Marissa's (from Graduate Christian Fellowship (GCF)) for a pumpkin-carving gathering.  I left my carved pumpkin there as no one but me would see it at my house, but I did take home the larger pieces carved out of all the pumpkins - more on that later.

On Halloween, after working my shift at the climbing wall, I picked up my "little" Moire and Jonathan and we went to Chipotle to meet Caleb and Eric (all GCF friends).  Chipotle had a Halloween deal they called "Boorito" - if you showed up in costume (even Jonathan's hastily thrown on sunglasses counted!) you could get a meal for $3 and the proceeds were all donated to charity.  For Moire and me, Chipotle's burrito bowl is two meals worth of food, so it was an extra good deal.  After dinner, we went back to campus and walked through Lullwater to the Emory President's Mansion.  Apparently it's an annual tradition for students to be invited in for trick-or-treating, to see the ground floor of the mansion, and to meet the president.

The next night was GCF's "First Friday Dinner" - a potluck dinner held the first Friday of every month.  I volunteered to bring vegetables so I steamed a large bunch of broccoli, but also brought pumpkin bread made from the fresh pumpkin pieces from carving on Sunday.  I had enough to make a full loaf, a 4x8 pan, and 24 mini-muffins.  Since the deadline for Emory's DPT applications was November 1, I had been working extra time answering emails and went into the PT office to work on Friday morning, bringing mini-muffins with me - I was able to give away 18 of them to happy recipients.

The Saturday after Halloween, I got a chance to volunteer at Emory's Pro Bono PT clinic.  Our department offers free physical therapy services the first Saturday of every month at the Good Samaritan Health Center in Atlanta.  Volunteering for this has been popular among the PT students - so much so that it is rare for someone to get scheduled for more than one Saturday.  Six students paired up and worked with three PTs to treat a total of ten patients for an hour each.  I got to use my Spanish skills again for two of our three patients as the second year with whom I worked knew no Spanish, and neither did our professor!

November 6 was "Networking Night" for the undergrads - Annie and I attended as representatives of the PT program as part of our graduate assistantship for Admissions, and enjoyed chatting with undergrads who were interested in pursuing physical therapy.  Two days later, Ashley (a second year) and I went to see Chris Tomlin for the closing concert of the Burning Lights Tour.

The next morning I got up slightly early and joined 3 Emory alumni and two other current students, all from GCF, for a hike at Cloudland Canyon in the far northwest corner of Georgia.  We were hoping for spectacular fall colors but as seems to be my luck here, most of the color had faded and fallen by the time we arrived.  Nevertheless, it was beautiful.  We took a 4.8 mile loop mostly along the rim of the canyon before descending to the bottom (according to a website it was over 1200 stairs, but I'm not so sure about that) to check out Cherokee and Hemlock Falls.

second to last semester

What on earth AM I doing back in class after my clinicals, you wonder?  So glad you asked.  Our last two semesters are each comprised of one required class, two or three electives, and research.

The required class is Advanced Medical Screening.  In this class, we learn to differentiate between injuries and conditions that we can treat with Physical Therapy and those conditions and diseases for which we need to refer the patient back to their primary care provider.  For example, shoulder, back, or neck pain are three common symptoms that may indicate a problem which Physical Therapy cannot address, and this class is teaching us to screen for non-musculoskeletal problems.

The electives I got for this semester are Spanish for Physical Therapists and Yoga for the Physical Therapist.  I'm really enjoying both classes.  The Spanish class is taught immersion style, with a wide range of skill levels.  I really like the fact that the goal is not perfect Spanish grammar, pronunciation, or verb conjugations, but clarity.  With that as a goal, the higher level students are held to a higher standard and have sentences corrected while the lower level students are told their sentences are perfect even if every word is mispronounced, out of order, and misconjugated, as long as the meaning comes through clearly.  I'm struggling happily at the bottom of the higher level group.

Yoga for the Physical Therapist is a mostly relaxing class.  We are learning a lot about how we can apply yoga in our future practice by doing yoga.  We start our four hour class with an hour and a half yoga class, typically with a focus about which we will later talk.  We then proceed to break it down, practicing teaching it to each other, coming up with our own progressions, and learning how to adjust someone else in a yoga posture, as well as learning to modify postures for various impairments.

My research group is the one qualitative research option we had.  It was apparently one of the more popular options, so the five of us in the group all really wanted to be in it and listed it as our first choice out of our fourteen options.  We are preparing to read narratives written by PT students about experiences during their initial clinical experiences.  We plan to identify themes within each narrative and search for common themes between narratives, as well as identify the level of reflection reached by each writer in the narrative.  Research has already shown the value of critical reflection in professional development, as a requisite of growth from "novice" to "expert" practicioners, so our research is intended to assist in the integration of critical reflection in the form of written narratives into PT education.  At this point, we are writing our proposal, and expect to be fully immersed in analyzing narratives during our Christmas break.

Of course I have been enjoying myself outside of school as well.  This year I've been able to attend Graduate Christian Fellowship on campus at Emory, with Thursday night meetings and dinner the first Friday of each month.  I started attending Passion City Church and am attending one of their community groups every third Tuesday night.  Other Tuesday nights have been spent playing volleyball in Tucker - I was introduced to that by my friend Brian who I first met playing intramural volleyball at Emory, and later attended church with him.  I'm working at the on-campus climbing wall every Thursday evening for a couple of hours, as well as trying to make it to the wall at least two other evenings per week to climb.  I've also gotten a second job - a graduate assistantship helping out with admissions for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

Labor Day, I joined a group of friends for a hike at Pine Mountain in FD Roosevelt State Park.  Getting there was a bit of a fiasco as three cars ended up in three different places, but we eventually convened and did our hike.  The day also started out with pouring rain, making the drive that much more interesting.  However, it stopped raining before we got there and didn't rain a single drop while we were out hiking.

On the second Monday of September, several of us went out to the Intramural fields after our medical screening class and played ultimate frisbee - it was hoped that this would become a weekly class sporting event but alas, it fizzled.

September 15 was Lazarus Health Day.  This event was an all-inclusive fair for the homeless, with medical screenings, glucose testing, HIV testing, medications, blood pressure, asthma screening, wound care, dental care, physical therapy, and many other facets.  Along with the medical care, there was a job search tent, resume writing assistance, clothing, a meal, a crafting and play area for children, a book tent, hygiene, and many other things.  My classmate Dan Chen and I joined a Georgia State third year PT student and one PT volunteering in the physical therapy tent, sharing space with two massage therapists and two chiropractors.

On Friday afternoons starting at the end of September, I've been volunteering for Stride Ahead with my classmate Jodi at Little Creek Horse Farm in Decatur.  Stride Ahead offers therapeutic riding lessons for people with special needs - read more about it on their website.  We've really been enjoying being around the horses - getting them in and out of their stalls, helping get them ready to ride, and either leading the horse or "sidewalking" to help the rider maintain balance.  We've worked mostly with children, some with mental/ psychological/ behavioral issues, some with physical disabilities, some with a combination.

The same Friday afternoon that I first volunteered at Stride Ahead, I headed south to Calvin Center in Hampton, GA for an overnight retreat with Graduate Christian Fellowship.  It was a rejuvenating time in a beautiful place.

cross-country road trip version 2013

On Saturday of my final weekend before heading back to Atlanta, I drove back up to San Francisco and picked up Elizabeth and Enzo.  I served as their transportation down to Elizabeth's cousin Matt's house in Santa Cruz in order to get a chance to see them.  We moved their luggage into Matt's house before heading out to pick up some lunch at a nearby market.  We took our food to Natural Bridges State Beach and enjoyed the sunshine and view before I had to get myself back to Cupertino.  That evening I had dinner with a friend since 4th grade, Robin - I hadn't had a chance to catch up with her in a few years, and it was unusual to get a chance for just the two of us to catch up since she and her husband have three kids.  I also briefly saw Susana and Steph, friends from CIBC, that night.  Sunday I mainly focused on organizing and packing, so I'd be ready to head out Monday morning.

Monday morning I picked up my snowboard buddy Pearl at her sister's place in Sunnyvale and we drove off to Valencia.  We hung out at Starbucks until Debbie (friend from Cal) got home from work, then Judy from my previous cross-country adventure joined us and we went out for some delicious Korean BBQ.

Pearl and I spent the night quite comfortably at Debbie's.  We got up early and hit the road, headed for Albuquerque.  We stopped at the Jackrabbit General Store just to check it out - it had a funny sign and a huge fiberglass rabbit.  As it got dark, the drive got a little bit exciting, with a dramatic lightning show to the east (see 16 second video below).  We couldn't tell if we were going to drive directly into it or not, and it did NOT look like it was going to be fun.  Fortunately, we passed to the south of it and were able to push on past Albuquerque to Moriarty where we spent the night.

In the morning, we hit the road again.  Our planned stop for the day was Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo, TX.  Well, the FIRST planned stop was a Walmart or similar store where we could purchase spray paint so we would be prepared for Cadillac Ranch.  We had a good time spray-painting the cars and then continued on to Sand Springs, OK, where we stayed with Aunt Kathy and David and enjoyed dinner with them, Jeff, Rocky, and Charlie.

Our fourth driving day took us across the Mississippi and eventually to Nashville, TN, but not without some unexpected adventure.  About an hour away from Nashville, I started to feel increased vibration in the car, and started hearing funny sounds.  It made me nervous enough that I stopped on a closed off-ramp because that was the closest place to stop.  I checked around the car, looking at all four tires.  They looked fine and nothing else was amiss, so I got back on the freeway.  As soon as I got up to speed, the vibration and noises got worse, so I took the next exit.  As I started to get off the freeway, we heard a "pop" and suddenly the extra noises stopped and the car started handling normally again.  Pearl and I agreed that we should check it out anyway.  When the light turned green to turn from the off-ramp, it was immediately clear that we had a flat tire.  Good thing we both know how to change a flat!  I drove into the gas station that was close and we started in - Pearl jacking up the car and me removing the spare from the back of the car.  Once I got the spare off, I took a turn at the jack.  As I was working, a car pulled up next to us and the driver offered help.  We gladly accepted when he explained that he hoped someone would stop and help his wife if she ever got a flat!  With the spare on, we eventually made it to Tiffany's.  She's the friend from Tahoe with whom Judy and I stayed back in December, but we got there pretty late that time.  This trip, we had enough daylight to check out the Parthenon and walk around a little lake at Centennial Park, drive down HonkyTonk Row as the sun set, and have a delicious dinner before another good night's sleep.

Friday morning, we drove our last leg from Nashville to Atlanta, ending my third cross-country road trip. We walked around the Emory campus and I tried to accomplish a couple of tasks.  For dinner, we discovered the pasta restaurant around the corner from my place, Saba, about which I'd heard good things, was indeed very good. Saturday morning we walked up Stone Mountain with a small collection of my Atlanta friends - Dan from church, Dan from my class, and Marius from the Emory climbing wall.  I actually tried to get another classmate and friend named Dan to join us, but he wasn't back in town yet.  In the afternoon, Pearl and I walked around Centennial Olympic Park in downtown, and later met my classmate Rob for a BBQ dinner.  Sunday morning I dropped Pearl off at the airport and went grocery shopping!
